Ron Della Chiesa on Johnny Coppola's "Hollywood
Indigo"
"Johnny Coppola has created
a film noire classic. Hollywood Indigo is one swinging journey through
Sinatra's smoke filled Rat Pack haunts and the Great American Songbook.
Outstanding." -Ron Della Chiesa, host of the Jazz Songbook, WGBH
Boston. MA and Strictly Sinatra, WPLM, Plymouth, MA.

HITS MAGAZINE ON JOHNNY COPPOLA at AMALFI
5. Johnny Coppola at Amalfi (Los Angeles): You probably know him as
an erstwhile crossover promotion whiz for Columbia, Capitol and MCA, but
this industry vet has taken the current music-biz doldrums as an opportunity
to live out his dreams as a classic pop crooner in the mold of his idol
Frank Sinatra. Dapper in his tailored suit and sipping occasionally from
a whiskey glass, Coppola heads an impressive five-piece ensemble that
includes noted music director Billy Cunliffe and a cameo appearance by
Billy West, the voice of Ren & Stimpy. Coppola smoothly integrates
standards like "I Only Have Eyes For You," "These Foolish
Things" and "Luck Be A Lady" with original spoken-word
raps "Im Just a Singer" and "She Was Spectacular."
As his alternate persona, the Rat Pack Poet, he effortlessly channels
Sinatra musing on such real-life events as beating up a columnist and
the love of his life, Ava Gardner. They can be heard on his own indie
release, Hollywood Indigo (Coku Music), which you can read about by clicking
here. If you know Johnny, prepare to be amazed. And even if you dont,
youll feel like you do after hearing him put across this classic
material with style and the backing of some remarkably accomplished musicians.

Johnny Coppola's "Hollywood Indigo"
will be available at
the end of February
Every
once in awhile, an album just grabs you by the collar and demands to be
appreciated. All too often, listening to music today has become a passive
affair. You pop in a CD (or plug in your iPod), and you're greeted with
sonic wallpaper
You know, music to multitask to. Then I got sent
a copy of Johnny Coppola's Hollywood Indigo, and it was like being caught
in a retro timewarp. While listening to the first track, "I've Been
In Love," I wondered if I had inadvertently stuck in a Sinatra or
Martin CD by mistake. I hadn't. The music was pure hipster bliss, interspersed
with spoken word bits that had me caught in their web. Artists trying
to evoke those '50s Rat Pack albums often fall flat on their face, mired
in an attitude that comes across as cheap schtick. Through sincerity or
alchemy, Coppola manages to avoid that fate. Instead, you're immersed
in a sonic space that is pure mood. And I dug it. I think you will to.
